ALTERNATIVE HEALTHCARE MODELS

Direct Primary Care

In January, 2020, John shadowed Dr. Paul Thomas at Plum Health Direct Primary Care in Detroit, Michigan to learn more about alternative primary care delivery models. Following, Dr. Thomas and John filmed a Q&A session to be posted on his blog.

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a membership based, Primary Care Health Model that is designed to increase accessibility for patients, maximize effectiveness of services, and enhance fulfillment for providers. Patients are charged flat rate monthly fee which in exchange gives them almost unlimited access to their provider via phone, text or email, same and next-day appointments that are up to an hour in length, at-cost medications which are purchased directly from medication wholesaler’s, and at-cost imaging and labs. The value received by having increased access to their physician, lengthy appointments, at-cost medications, imaging, and labs outweighs the ‘burden’ for patients of paying the monthly fee. Patients are still encouraged to maintain health insurance coverage for emergencies and hospital based treatment, but are counseled on premium vs. deductible ratio insurance plans depending on their health status.
